Lady Catherine Ashton, Baroness Ashton of Upholland, is a life peer in the House of Lords. From 2009-2014, she served as the European Union's first High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Among other things, she negotiated the Iran Nuclear Deal alongside Secretary John Kerry and brought Serbia and Kosovo to a long needed agreement.
Previously in her career, she focused on education and human rights issues. She served as a junior education minister (2001–04), and in 2002 she assumed leadership of the early-childhood-development initiative Sure Start. In 2004 Ashton switched portfolios, becoming a junior minister for Constitutional affairs. She was admitted to the Privy Council in May 2006, and later that year she was recognized as the politician of the year by the gay and lesbian rights group Stonewall for her efforts to promote equality.
Lady Catherine Ashton currently is the Chancellor of the University of Warwick (UK).
